Tips for School Success
- Get to know your school and the school district.
- Read the student and the parent handbooks.
- Attend all parent conferences and IEP meetings.
- Be prepared with ideas, suggestions, and questions.
- Talk to the school if your child has a problem that may affect how he/she does in school.
- Express any concerns about child’s progress openly with the school.
- Be organized. Keep a folder with your child’s important school records and papers.
- Attend school functions.
- Volunteer in the classroom and school!
- Show respect and appreciation for your child’s principals and teachers.
- Set aside a time and place for homework and check that assignments are completed.
- Set household rules to limit television, computer games, and other electronic games.
- Check your child’s school bag every day. Read and respond to every announcement and letter that comes home.
- Praise your child’s efforts and his/her accomplishments.
- Ask your child what they are learning in school.
- Tell your child you are proud of their efforts and achievements.
- Arrange for your child to have organized social activities.
- Read aloud with your child and talk about what you read.
- Play with your child, doing something he/she chooses.
- Make sure your child is healthy and gets enough sleep, exercise and eats right.
- Talk about school in positive terms, pointing out that school is important.
- Meet your child’s friends and get to know their parents.
- Talk about families, careers, and money and the connection between jobs and school.
- Encourage big dreams.
- Encourage hobbies and volunteer opportunities.
- Attend cultural events, visit museums and historic sites.
- Use the library.
- Listen to music together.
